Internet Retailer reports that eBags.com is closing its UK website, ebags.co.uk. eBags.com has been running the site since October, 2004.
The closing resulted in the company eliminating the jobs of its 10 employees in the Cambridge facility where the U.K. operation was based since it was set up in October 2004. Those employees handled merchandising, product photography, marketing and fulfillment for eBags.co.uk, the U.K. site. Such other tasks as web design and information were handled from the company's base in Denver, Cobb says. The recession was to blame because eBags.com cofounder Peter Cobb said they probably would not have closed the website if the economy had been better. eBags has also cut staff in the U.S. 36 jobs have been eliminated, which is about 30% of the company's work force. eBags about page says they have sold nearly 7 million bags since they started the company. They are currently running a sale on designer handbags.
While Cobb says eBags.co.uk became the leading U.K. online retailer of handbags, luggage, backpacks and laptop cases, it never broke even. Among the reasons he cites are the expense of establishing the eBags brand with heavy paid search spending, the unfavorable exchange rate for most of the time the U.K. unit was operated and generally higher costs for facilities and personnel in Britain.

Bidding will start at $5 million, says Howard-Sneyd, who has already fielded inquiries from private clients in India and the Middle East interested in the piece. You can zoom in on the carpet's image here on Sotheby's. Rug Rag also has some close ups here. (via Born Rich)
Crafted in the 1860s as a gift for the tomb of the Prophet Mohammad in Medina, Saudi Arabia, the carpet was created under the auspices of Gaekwar Kande Rao, the maharajah of Baroda, a former kingdom in northwest India that is now part of Gujarat state. It took five years of labor by hundreds of craftsmen. Some 2 million seed pearls and colored glass beads and gems set in a gold foil background make up the swirling rosette design.

Bloomberg reports that meat-eating consumers are "trading down" from beef to chicken as they look for a cheaper meat. The article cites Deutsche Bank and Safeway as the source of the data.
The switch will squeeze beef and pork producers, while chicken sellers may gain from the quest for "cheaper protein," Deutsche Bank said in its "Monthly Mouthful" report. Still, poultry prices face pressure as rising protectionism and global recession make global trade more competitive, the report said. The article also talks about the expected increase in the slaughter of dairy cows as farmers try and cut costs. We mentioned one reason the slaughter of dairy cows is increasing earlier. Dairy farmers want to sell the cows to cut costs. Normally the dairy cows would be sold to another dairy farmer but because so many dairy farmer are struggling they can't find any dairy farmers that are doing well enough to buy their cows and so the dairy cows end up being sold to the beef market.
"We're seeing more shifts in the meat category to cheaper meats -- ground beef and chicken -- than we saw earlier in the year," said Safeway Chairman Steven Burd. There is "a trading down virtually across the board" in retail and even "non- retail" products, he said during the Pleasanton, California- based company's earnings teleconference on Feb. 26.

Add to myYahoo! One dress is a winner, the other is a rag. It does not take a genius (or five seconds) to figure out which is which. The deep blue ruffled number is to-die-for awesome. Good job with the silver accessories too.Jessica Stroup?s Pamella Roland number is a rag, to say the least. The plunging [...]
