Add to myYahoo!Style.com reports that designer John Galliano will be decorating the Christmas tree at the Claridge's hotel in London.
Word from London is that Claridge's, the city's most storied hotel, has asked the Christian Dior designer to decorate the Christmas tree that greets the guests in its Art Deco lobby. (Trimming duties were previously handled by an in-house team.) Galliano may be based in Paris, but he is, after all, a Commander of the British Empire. The tree will be unveiled on December 1st. We look forward to seeing photos of the Claridge's tree when they become available.

Add to myYahoo!Mary Kate and Ashley Olsen's beauty line mary-kateandashley is being discontinued. WWD reports that the line, which was produced by NuWorld Beauty and sold at Wal-Mart, was created in 2002. The line was extensive, with hair appliances, makeup and fragrances. But this may not be the end of the Olsens' foray into the beauty world.
Despite mary-kateandashley's beauty exit, the Olsens aren't ruling out the beauty business. A spokeswoman for the fashionable duo, whose junior brand, Olsenboye, will bow at J.C. Penney in February, indicated the Olsens might consider reentering beauty under the Olsenboye label after the debut of apparel and accessories. We wouldn't be surprised if a new line is already in the works with a slightly higher price point and a new licensee.

Add to myYahoo! The buzz about Augmented Reality (AR) is building quickly. The technology allows users to view a digital layer of information on top of what is really there. For example, you could wear an AR-enabled headset that allows you to see the street addresses of every building you look at or you could wear an AR headset at the baseball game and see the score and information about the current batter. AR also allows animations and videos to come to life using a webcam. AR has already been applied for use in baseball cards, books, business cars, navigation, zombie games, music videos and even location your car in the parking lot. You can find out more about what augmented reality is here, here and here.
CNN shows some augmented reality in the video below including an example of an iPod application that lets you find the closest fast food restaurant by looking through your iPod. There are also applications that add AR layers for finding banks or determing who received bailout money. CNN also shows you an AR digital pet game you can play with using a webcam. Take a look:

Reuters reports that Children's Place sales are up while 3rd quarter sales at the more expensive children's Gymboree fell. Gymboree's Q3 comparable store sales were down 4%. Reuters said the kids category was one of the worst performing categories for several retailers in October.
Third quarter net sales at Children's Place Retail Stores Inc topped estimates at Wall Street as the retailer gained favor with thrifty shoppers, even as more expensive rival Gymboree Corp saw third-quarter sales miss the mark. The lower-priced discount stores have been faring much better during the economy. Parents and families are probably sharing more hand me downs when it comes to children clothes now than they have in recent years. The trend will probably continue until people have a reason to spend more money which probably won't happen until we have a jobs recovery.
Kids apparel has been a weak link for many retailers this month, with Dillard's Inc., Kohl's Corp and Target Corp naming the segment among their worst performing categories.
Children's Place shares were up 8 percent in morning trade on Nasdaq, while Gymboree shares were down 7 percent.

Add to myYahoo!Justin Timberlake's fashion line William Rast is expandingglobally. The line was founded by Justin and his friend Trace Ayala and features sportswear and denim. Three stores opened in California on November 1st and the company is planning a rollout of up to 50 units by 2012.
The company's strategy is quite interesting. It's expanding during the recession in order to lock up leases in upscale malls at bargain basement prices. The company is avoiding high profile streets such as Melrose in Los Angeles and stand-alone stores. The company wants the walk-in traffic that upscale malls provide. The expansion is being overseen by Colin Dyne, the CEO of People's Liberation, the L.A. based company that runs the operations of Rast, as well as of its own brand and of J. Lindeberg. WWD reports:
Unlike denim competitors who have raised their retail flags on high-profile streets such as Robertson Boulevard and Melrose Place in Los Angeles, William Rast opted for shopping malls. Dyne said he will step outside of the mall in cities such as New York, where the company is considering a spot in SoHo near the J. Lindeberg store on Spring Street.Johan and Marcella Lindeberg have gotten excellent reviews in their tenure as chief designers for the line. They are launching a more upscale line of their own again (they were the founders of J. Lindeberg) in the fall of 2010. Presumably they will continue to design for William Rast, as well.
*****
Working with the Los Angeles-based architecture firm Johnston Marklee, William Rast transported the rugged Americana found in Timberlake and Ayala's home state of Tennessee to Tinseltown for an aesthetic dubbed New America. In the 1,850-square-foot store in Century City, the design offsets matte black shelves filled with jeans retailing for $165 to $245 with wide planks of plywood, which were seamed together to create high tables and an angular arch stretching above shoppers' heads. Vintage dress forms show off the $350 men's houndstooth blazer, $229 women's jean jacket and $250 vest dotted with grommets.
*****
Booming through the stereo speakers is a mix of rock and blues tunes that Timberlake compiled for the soundtracks played during the brand's fashion shows. In addition, Timberlake can be seen taking a bow at the end of the fall 2009 runway show playing on a TV screen in the store. Other than that, there's no visible sign of Timberlake in the store. It's a deliberate move to distance William Rast from the cult of personality that often swarms -- and sometimes detracts from -- a celebrity brand."We've always made sure that it's about the product first," Dyne said. "We use Justin in the right ways. He was in our first ad campaign and he'll be in our next ad campaign."
