Palm Pre Debuts at CES to Rave Reviews

Palm PrePalm unveiled its latest smartphone, the Palm Pre, at the Consumer Electronics Show (CEW). The Pre is a nice-looking smartphone with a touch screen and a QWERTY keyboard that slides out from the phone. One smart feature is that the touch screen extends below the screen so you can operate some of the phone's functions without your hand blocking the touch screen. Gadget geeks are raving about its specs and performance. Gizmodo calls the Pre simply amazing. Engadget says the Pre's UI is "incredibly well thought out and smooth." PC Magazine says the Pre is the hottest product at CES. They list some of the Pre's impressive specs.

First of all, the specs are impressive: a large multi-touch screen, powerful processor, accelerometer, hidden QWERTY keyboard, multitasking, GPS, 802.11b/g Wi-Fi, and 3.2 megapixel camera. Honestly, it's a long list that I could scarcely cover. However there's more than simply me-too technology to the Pre; it offers real innovation. From a new app and tasks management metaphor known as "Cards" to the gesture area, this is a smart phone that's breaking new ground.
They also note the Pre's operating software was built from the ground-up. They write that, "As the hour-long demo went on I began to feel like I was sitting at an Apple event, listening to Steve Jobs wax rhapsodic about the amazing stuff his latest tech gizmo could accomplish."

That's interesting because Jon Rubinstein, a former Apple engineer, is one of the developers of the Palm Pre. Newsweek says Apple's Steve Jobs was furious when Rubinstein left Apple for Palm. Palm's engineers believe the Palm Pre is better than the iPhone.
Still, over the course of two days, Rubinstein and others at Palm couldn't help pointing out that the Pre outperforms the iPhone. Palm's advantages include faster Web browsing, a better camera, and the ability to run many applications at the same time. Egos being what they are in the Valley, it's easy to believe that despite all the talk about not competing with Apple, these guys do, in fact, secretly harbor the desire to knock Apple firmly on its backside-and that while the marketing guys may have decided, correctly, that it's best not to pick a fight with a bigger, wealthier opponent, the engineers simply can't help talking smack.
The Palm Pre is expected to be out later this year - sometime in the first half of the year. Pricing is not yet known. USA Today's Ed Baig talked with Palm CEO Ed Colligan about the Palm Pre

U.S. Mint Issues Consumer Warning About Obama
Inaugural Coins

Obama Inauguration Commemorative Coins

There are several different commemorative coins being sold because of Obama's upcoming inauguration. Most people hopefully realize that coins like the coin pictured above from a company called the New England Mint are not real but the U.S. Mint still issued a warning to consumers that these are not real United States Mint products.
It has come to the attention of the United States Mint that several private commercial businesses are advertising so-called "Barack Obama Presidential $1 Coins," as well as commemorative half-dollar coins, American Eagle Silver Coins and multi-coin sets bearing images of the President-Elect. These advertisements feature genuine United States coins that the private commercial businesses have altered by affixing a colorized image to the coin. Additionally, some businesses have treated the coins by gold-plating them.
MSNBC's ConsumerMan Herb Weisbaum has investigated the coins and was told by coin experts that the coins are "overpriced trinkets" and not investment coins. Weisbaum says, "If you do decide to buy, realize what you'll get: an unofficial coin that has no intrinsic or investment value. It's purely sentimental."

Mary J. Blige was Notorious

I know I always say it’s best to wear color coordinated clothing, but Mary J. Blige just went a bit too much for my taste. At the “Notorious” premiere in New York, the singer wore a caramel belted black turtle neck mini over black leggings, with caramel leather jacket, and caramel leather boots.Rating 1[Source]

OLED TVs at the Consumer Electronics Show

Sony Xel1 OLED TV

Sony's 11-inch XEL-1 television (pictured above) with a contrast ratio of 1,000,000:1 is the first OLED tv to go on sale in the United States. The ultra-thin tv has the width of just three stacked credit cards. It retails for $2,500 and can purchased here on Sony Style. Sony is also demonstrating a prototype 20-inch OLED at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES).

Engadget has a post about a 15-inch OLED tv from LG that was on display at CES and is expected to be out this summer. Engadget writes, "Nothing else compares to the incredible contrast achieved by these OLED displays."

You can see a very skinny OLED tv in the clip below. There's also a clip here where Samsung discusses OLED technology. LED stands for organic light-emitting diodes. With OLED technology comes the promise of ultra-thin video screens that can folded or rolled up.

Gifting Suites at the Golden Globes

Variety says the economy is a drag on swag. They mention that some manufacturers are concerned about the image of a celebrity holding or wearing a free product they got at a gift suite. The Variety story mentions a couple gift suites that are letting celebrities donate to charities instead. HBO's Golden Globe Luxury Lounge is featured in the clip below and they appear to have plenty of swag. HBO's Luxury Lounge gift suite features styling products form L'Oreal, jeans from Cohesive Apparel and a $3,650 compact made out of "lemon citrine and pale green quartz stones set in 18K yellow gold with diamond details." Britt Johnson, CEO of Mediaplacement, runs HBO's Luxury Lounge. Johnson told Variety that the "cost of giving out product at a suite is still less expensive than paying for one celebrity appearance fee. This way vendors will meet over 100 celebrities and get photos with them and their products."
