The Disappearing Antiques Store

The L.A. Times points out something that we should have known, but hadn't really fully appreciated: antique stores are disappearing. More and more vendors are selling items online and ditching their stores.

Antique stores are becoming something of an antique themselves: The number that specialize in furnishings at least 100 years old - the generally accepted definition of an antique - is declining, said Connie Swaim of AntiqueWeek. Walk some of the local antiquing districts, and one can sense that.

For antiquers, the closure of shops threatens a beloved pastime: browsing crowded aisles in search of the perfect find. Stores such as Connoisseur are becoming harder to find as tastes shift away from bronze and crystal chandeliers, terra cotta lions, marble sculpture and other ornate period looks.

We do love online shopping. But there's something about browsing through an antique store that we just love. Disappearing antiques stores: not a good thing.

Hey!
So I recently purchased a Flip Video Mino...
....compact and easy, the Flip Mino is a video camera that's about the size of a large ipod. I've been wanting to bring some video to the Fashion Bomb for a while, and my Flip made it perfect for my fashionable pursuits!
I took my cute camera with me to a Central Park Summerstage Concert a few weeks ago and shot some Real Style.
So I present: Fashion Bomb TV!
Cool, huh? Did I mention that I'm technologically impaired?? I edited that all by myself; it's rough, but it was actually pretty simple!

Mr. Blackwell Recovering From Serious Illness

Famed fashion critic Richard Blackwell, who is best known for his annual Worst Dressed List, was hospitalizedfor a serious infection, but has regained consciousness and is doing better now. He is 85.

Richard Blackwell, 85, collapsed at his home and was unconscious when he was brought to the hospital on Tuesday, publicist Harlan Boll said. Blackwell was given antibiotics to treat the unspecified infection."He appears to be cognizant of his surrounding and acknowledged his partner, Spencer," Boll said.

Blackwell was a noted fashion designer in the 1950s and 1960s who dressed the likes of Jane Russell and Dorothy Lamour.However, he is best-known for his annual list of worst-dressed women. First issued in 1960, it has skewered the style sense of Hollywood celebrities, politicians and other celebs with tongue-in-cheek cruelty.

His annual list is cruel, it's true. But of course we always read it.

Isaac Hayes
August 20, 1942 - August 10, 2008

Isaac Hayes, the pioneering singer, songwriter and musician whose relentless "Theme From Shaft" won Academy and Grammy awards, died Sunday, the Shelby County Sheriff's Office said. He was 65. A family member found Hayes unresponsive near a treadmill and he was pronounced dead about an hour later at Baptist East Hospital in Memphis, according to the sheriff's office. The cause of death was not immediately known.

Get ready for summer!

Here are some tips for the summer season!
Här är något tips för sommaren!

1)Colours...Either bright colours like yellow, green or pink or the more subtle ones like grey, coral or beige. Silver seems to be a top too :)
Avänder klara färger (till exempel guld, grön eller rosa) eller subtila färger (till exempel grå, coral eller beige). Silver är modernt också.

2)Since it's going to be warm, sheer material is the way to go!
Vädret vill blir varm! Skaffa det sheer tyget :)

3) Maxi dresses are in, especially those in block colours, bold geometric designs or floral.
Maxi klänning är modernt särskilt med block färger, geometriska mönster eller med blommönster.

4) For a summer night out get those short dresses with sequins for an added sparkle. A little bit of leather works well too!

Scientists Create an Exercise Pill

At last, scientists have created an exercise pill. That's right. It's a pill that gives the effects of spending hours on a stairmaster. Only without the sweating and sore muscles.

Scientists have discovered what could be the ultimate workout for couch potatoes: exercise in a pill.In experiments on mice that did no exercise, the chemical compound, known as AICAR, allowed them to run 44% farther on a treadmill than those that did not receive the drug.

The drug appeared to change the physical composition of muscle, essentially transforming the tissue from sugar-burning fast-twitch fibers to fat-burning slow-twitch ones, the same change that occurs in distance runners and cyclists through training, according to research released Thursday."You're getting the benefits of exercise without having to do any work," said David Mangelsdorf, a pharmacologist at University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center in Dallas, who was not connected with the research.It is unknown if the drug has any benefit for athletes who actually work out -- or for any human, for that matter, since the research has so far only involved mice.

The compound, which is naturally produced in tiny amounts in human muscle cells and has been studied for decades, is readily available through scientific supply companies. One company was offering AICAR for $120 a gram. At that price, giving a person the drug in the same concentration the mice got would cost thousands of dollars a day.

Evans predicted that in the wake of his study, published in the journal Cell, the drug would "fly off the shelves."AICAR has been tested in humans for a variety of conditions. "It was found to be a quite safe drug, at least at the doses we were using," said chemist Paul Laikind, who began testing it in the 1980s as a means of preserving blood flow to the heart during surgery.Drug maker Schering-Plough Corp. is trying to develop it as an intravenous infusion for use during bypasses.With more research, scientists said, the drug's fat-burning properties could also help reduce weight, ward off diabetes, prevent heart disease and restore the fitness of bedridden patients.

Of course, any practical applications are years away. We say: full speed ahead.
